MEET ALI AKPINAR: TURKISH LANGUAGE TEACHER FROM ISTANBUL

I was born in Istanbul in 1972, and I have lived in this fascinating city throughout my life. Growing up and living in Istanbul has given me a lifelong connection with the Turkish language and culture.

My academic background is in language teaching. I studied at the English Teaching Department at Marmara University in Istanbul. After graduating, I began working as a language teacher, teaching both English and Turkish at various language schools.

Over time, I developed a particular interest in creating practical learning resources that help students understand Turkish grammar, build vocabulary, and use the language in everyday situations.

In 2004, I established Dem Turkish Center, my own Turkish language teaching business. Since then, I have been working independently as a Turkish language teacher and developing self-published learning materials for students who want to study Turkish.

Today, Dem Turkish Center brings together my teaching experience and educational resources to help learners study Turkish at their own pace.

My Education and Turkish Teaching Experience

My professional experience in language education began in 1997. From 1997 to 2004, I worked at various language schools in Istanbul, teaching English and Turkish.

This experience helped shape my understanding of language learning and the importance of clear explanations, structured practice, and meaningful communication.

Since founding Dem Turkish Center in 2004, I have focused on teaching Turkish independently and creating my own learning materials.

My work combines two important aspects of language education:

  • Teaching Turkish Helping learners understand and practise Turkish through lessons and guided learning.
  • Creating Turkish learning materials Developing courses, books, worksheets, and audio resources for students who want to improve their Turkish through independent study.

I believe that learning materials should do more than present grammar rules and vocabulary lists. They should help learners understand how Turkish works and give them opportunities to use what they learn.

An English-Speaking Turkish Teacher for International Students

Learning a new language can be challenging, especially at the beginning. Turkish has its own grammatical structures, suffixes, word order, and pronunciation patterns, which may be unfamiliar to learners.

As an English-speaking Turkish language teacher, I can use English to explain Turkish grammar, introduce new vocabulary, and clarify instructions when necessary.

This is particularly helpful for beginners who are just starting to learn Turkish and need clear explanations before they can confidently use the language.

However, my approach is not to rely on English all the time. As your Turkish improves, I gradually reduce the use of English and encourage you to understand more instructions and explanations in Turkish.

The goal is to help you become increasingly comfortable using Turkish rather than depending on translation for everything.

My Approach to Teaching Turkish

My main goal as a Turkish teacher is to help students use Turkish in as many real-life situations as possible.

Learning grammar and vocabulary is important, but knowing individual words and rules is not enough. You also need to understand how to combine them, express your thoughts, ask questions, and communicate with other people.

For this reason, my Turkish lessons are designed to develop the four essential language skills:

1. Speaking

Speaking practice helps you use Turkish actively instead of simply memorising words and grammar rules. It gives you opportunities to form sentences, ask and answer questions, and practise communicating in everyday situations.

2. Listening

Listening helps you recognise Turkish words and expressions when people speak. It also allows you to become more familiar with pronunciation, sentence patterns, and the natural flow of spoken Turkish.

3. Reading

Reading practice helps you expand your vocabulary, recognise grammatical structures, and understand how Turkish sentences are organised. Suitable reading materials can also introduce you to everyday expressions and different aspects of Turkish life.

4. Writing

Writing allows you to put your knowledge into practice. By constructing sentences, answering questions, and writing short texts, you can reinforce vocabulary and grammar while developing your ability to express yourself in Turkish.

Alongside these four skills, my teaching approach combines communicative activities with structured practice. The aim is to help you understand how Turkish works and apply what you learn to situations you may encounter in daily life.

Can You Take Turkish Lessons With Your Own Book?

Yes! If you are already studying Turkish with a textbook or following another Turkish language course, we can use your existing learning materials during lessons.

Perhaps you are studying Turkish grammar but need help understanding a particular topic. Maybe you want to practise speaking, review vocabulary, or work through exercises that you find difficult.

In these situations, lessons can focus on the materials you are already using and the areas where you need additional support.

Alternatively, we can work with my own Turkish lessons and learning resources, depending on your goals and current level.

The aim is to make your learning experience relevant to your needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.
