Basic Question Form in Turkish

WH- Questions in Turkish

There is no question form in Turkish. I mean you have to change the word order (just like English) to make questions.

All you need to do is replace the question word with the answer without changing the word order. For example:

  • KİM bir kahve içiyor? WHO is drinking a coffee?
  • ALİ bir kahve içiyor. ALİ is drinking a coffee.
  • Ali NE içiyor? WHAT is Ali drinking?
  • Ali BİR KAHVE içiyor. Ali is drinking A COFFEE.

Yes / No Questions in Turkish

You can form yes / no question form in Turkish using the question word "Mi?". This is a separate word but it has variants depending on the vowel harmony: "Mi / mü / mı / mu".

Simply add this question word to the exnd of the sentences to form yes / no questions. For example:

  • O bir ev. O bir ev mi? It's a house. Is it a house?
  • Bir problem var. Bir problem var mı? There is a problem. Is there a problem?
  • O Türkçe biliyor. O Türkçe biliyor mu? He knows Turkish. Does he know Turkish?
  • O bir film izledi. O bir film izledi mi? He watched a film. Did he watch a film?
  • O tatile yapacak. O tatil yapacak mı? He is going to have a holiday. Is he going to have a holiday?
