How to form & use "Because" in Turkish
Learn how to use "Because" in Turkish language in this short Turkish lesson. This Turkish lesson is ideal for beginner (A2) or pre-intermediate Turkish language learners. This is what you will learn in this lesson:
- I am learning Turkish, because I live in Turkey.
- We were late for the meeting because of the traffic.
- We were late because of you.

1. Because = Çünkü
The word for "Because" in Turkish is "Çünkü". It is used in the same way as in English. For example:
- Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum, çünkü ben Türkiye'de yaşıyorum. I am learning Turkish, because I live in Turkey.
- Ben bugün işe gitmedim, çünkü ben hastayım. I didn't go to work today, because I am sick.
The word "Bu yüzden" or "O yüzden" is "So, therefore" in English. For example:
- Ben Türkiye'de yaşıyorum, bu yüzden ben Türkçe öğreniyorum. I live in Turkey, so I am learning Turkish.
- Ben hastayım, bu yüzden ben bugün işe gitmedim.
2. Because = - diği için
"Because" in Turkish can be as a conjunction ("Çünkü" as above) or a clause ("- diği için"). There is no difference in meaning except for the form. For example:
Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum, çünkü ben Türkiye'de yaşıyorum.
=Ben Türkiye'de yaşadığım için Türkçe öğreniyorum.
I am learning Turkish, because I live in Turkey.
Ben bugün işe gitmedim, çünkü ben hastayım.
Ben hasta olduğum için bugün işe gitmedim.
I didn't go to work today, because I am sick.
3. Because Of = - den dolayı & - in yüzünden
Another use of "Because" in Turkish is "Because of" (reason), which is "- den dolayı" in Turkish. Fpr example::
- Biz geç kaldık. We were late.
- Biz trafikten dolayı geç kaldık. We were late because of the traffic.
- Biz futbol oynamadık. We didn't play football.
- Biz yağmurdan dolayı futbol oynamadık. We didn't play football because of the rain.
If you are blaming or accusing someone, "Because of" is "- in yüzünden".
- Biz senin yüzünden geç kaldık. We were late because of you.<
- Biz Ali'nin yüzünden maçı kaybettik. We lost the game because of Ali.
