1. BİR

The word "Bir" is "One" in English, but it is also used as "A / An" (Indefinite article. For example:

Bir, iki, üç, ... One, two, three, ...

Bu bir araba. This is a car.

Ben bir doktorum. I am a doctor.

O güzel bir kız. She is a beautiful girl.

2. BU

The word "Bu" is "this" in English. It is also used as "Bunu". What's the difference?

If this Turkish word is the subject of the sentences, it is "Bu". For example:

Bu bir araba. This is a car.

If it is used with a noun as an adjective, it is "Bu" again. For example:

Bu araba çok iyi. This car is very good.

If it is the object of the sentences, it becomes "Bunu". For example:

Ben bunu istiyorum. I want this.

Ben bunu seviyorum. I like this.

3. BUYURUN

The word "Buyurun" is used as "Can I help? How can I help?". For example:

A: Buyurun? (The shopkeeper asks "Can I help?" to the customer".)

B: Peynir var mı? (The customer asks "Do you have any cheese?".)

The word "Buyurun" is also used as "Here is your ...". For example:

Buyurun, (sizin) biletiniz. Here is your ticket.

Buyurun, para üstü. Here is the change.

This word is also used as "This way / Follow me please".

4. ÇIKMAK

The verb "Çıkmak" is "To exit, leave" in English. For example:

Sen saat kaçta evden çıkıyorsun? What time do you leave home?

Ben bu akşam dışarı çıkıyorum. I am going out this evening.

This verb is also used as "To go on, go for" in English. For example:

Ben tatile çıkıyorum. I am going on vacation.

Ben tura çıkıyorum. I am going on a tour.

Biz bu akşam yemeğe çıkıyoru. We are going for dinner this evening.

It is used for any actions upwards. For example:

Ağaca çıkmak = To climb a tree Yukarı çıkmak = To go upstairs ...

5. HİÇ

The word "Hiç" is used as 1) any 2) at all 3) ever & never. For example:

Hiç yumurta var mı? Are there any eggs?

Ben dans etmeyi hiç sevmiyorum. I don't like dancing at all.

A: Sen hiç Bodrum'a gittin mi? Have you ever been to Bodrum?

B: Hayır, hiç gitmedim. No, never.

6. İÇİN

The word "için" is "For" in English. For example:

Bu Ali için. This is for Ali.

Bu senin için. This is for you.

This word is also used for purpose. For example:

Ben pizza yemek için restorana gidiyorum. I am going to the restaurant (for) to eat a pizza.

7. İSTEMEK

The verb "İstemek" is "To Want" in Turkish. Here is how it is used:

Ben bir çay istiyorum. I want a tea.

Ben bir çay içmek istiyorum. I want to drink a tea.

8. KADAR

The word "Kadar" is used as "How much". For example:

Bu ne kadar / kaç para? How much is this?

Sen ne kadar süt istiyorsun? How much milk do you want?

The word "Kadar" is used as "as ... as" (Similarity). For example:

New York büyük. İstanbul da büyük. İstanbul New York kadar büyük. New York is big. Istanbul is big too. Istanbul is as big as New York.

The word "Kadar" is also used for exclamation. For example:

Ne kadar güzel! How nice!

9. NASIL

The word "Nasıl" is "How" in English. For example:

(Sen) Nasılsın? How are you?

Nasıl gidiyor? How is it going?

Hava nasıl? How is the weather / What's the weather like?

This question word is also used as "What kind, type, sort". For example:

Sen ne çeşit / nasıl filmler seviyorsun? What kind of films do you like?

10. VAR

The word "Var" is "There Is / Are" in Turkish. For example:

Bir araba var. There is a car.

It is also used as "Verb To Have (Possession)". For example:

Benim bir arabam var. I have a car.

The person is possessive person (My, Your, His etc) in this form. Fo example:

Benim bir arabam var. I have a car.

Senin bir araban var. You have a car.

Onun bir araba var. He / She has a car.

The negative form of the "Var" is "Yok" (There isn't / aren't & Don't / doesn't have). For example:

Bir araba var. Bir araba yok. There is a car. There isn't a car.

Benim bir arabam var. Benim bir araba yok. I have a car. I don't have a car.

11. YAPMAK

The verb "Yapmak" is "To do & make" in English. For example:

O spor yapıyor. He is doing sports.

O kahve yapıyor. He is making coffee.

It is also translated as "To have" in some cases. For example:

O kahvaltı yapıyor. He is is having breakfast.

O tatil yapıyor. He is having a vacation.
