In a nutsehll, there are 3 basic Turkish tenses and the other Turkish verb tenses are derived from these basic Turkish verbs tenses. For example:

  • O bir kitap okuyor. He is reading / reads a book.
  • O bir kitap okudu. He read / has read a book.
  • O bir kitap okuyordu. He was reading a book.

BASIC VERB TENSES IN TURKISH

Learn the present, past and future tenses in Turkish.

Present Tense in Turkish

The suffix for present tenses in Turkish is "YOR". This suffix is used for the Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense, the Simple Present Tense and the Present Perfect Continuous (Progressive) Tense in English. For example:

  • O şimdi bir film izliyor. He is watching a film now.
  • O her zaman bir film izliyor. He always watches a film.
  • O 1 saattir bir film izliyor. He has been watching a film for 1 hour.

Past Tense in Turkish

The suffix for past tenses in Turkish is "DI (- di / dü / dı / du -)". This suffix is used for the Simple Past Tense and the Present Perfect Tense in English. For example:

  • O dün Ali'yi gördü. He saw Ali yesterday.
  • O Ali'yi gördü. He has seen Ali.

Future Tense in Turkish

The suffix for future tenses in Turkish is "ECEK (- ecek / acak)". This suffix is used for the Simple Future Tense and "Be Going To" in English. For example:

  • Yarın yağmur yağacak. It will rain tomorrow.
  • O bu yaz tatil yapacak. He is going to take a vacation this summer.

Aorist Tense in Turkish

The Aorist Tense is used for habits, everyday routine, facts promising, volunteer actions, offers, requests and in some grammar forms. For example:

  1. Habits O çay içiyor / içer. He drinks tea.
  2. Routine O erken kalkıyor / kalkar. He gets up early.
  3. Facts, Factual Reality Ay dünyanın etrafında döner. The moon travels around the earth.
  4. Promising Ben sana yardım ederim. (I promise) I will help you.
  5. Volunteer Action “Kapı çalıyor.” “Ben açarım.” “There is someone at the door.” “I’ll open it.”
  6. Offers Siz çay içer misiniz? Would you like to drink tea?

CONTINUOUS (PROGRESSIVE) TENSES IN TURKISH

Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense in Turkish

The suffix for Present Continuous (Progressive) Tense in Turkish is "YOR", which is also used for the Simple Present Tense and the Present Perfect Continuous (Progressive) Tense in English. For example:

  • O şimdi bir film izliyor. He is watching a film now.
  • O her zaman bir film izliyor. He always watches a film.
  • O 1 saattir bir film izliyor. He has been watching a film for 1 hour.

Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense in Turkish

The suffix for the Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense in Turkish is "YORDU", which is a combination of the present (YOR) and past (DI) suffix. For example:

  • O bir film izliyor. He is watching film.
  • O bir film izledi. He watched a film.
  • O bir film izliyordu. He was watching a film.

Future Continuous (Progressive) Tense in Turkish

The suffix nd the word for the future continuous (progressive) tense in Turkish is "-YOR OLACAK". For example:

  • O bir film izliyor olacak. He will be watching a film.
  • Ben bir film izliyor olacağım. I will be watching a film.
  • Sen bir film izliyor olacaksın. You will be watching a film.
  • Biz bir film izliyor olacağız. We will be watching a film.
  • Siz bir film izliyor olacaksınız. You will be watching a film.
  • Onlar bir film izliyor olacak(lar). They will be watching a film.
