Learn the noun cases in Turkish language. The noun cases in Turkish are formed with the suffixes used for "The, To, At/In, From" in English.

The Turkish language doesn't have words for nouns cases (The, To, At / In, From etc) like English and other languages. Instead, case suffixes are employed for these words.

NOUN CASES IN TURKISH LANGUAGE

In this lesson, you will learn the noun cases in Turkish language. So, what are the noun cases in Turkish language? For example:

  • O evi aldı. He has bought the house.
  • O eve gidiyor. He is going to the house.
  • O evde kalıyor. He is staying at the house.
  • O evden geliyor. He is coming from the house.

Now study how these noun cases work in Turkish language:

"To, At/In, From" in Turkish

1. THE in Turkish

The suffix (definite object) for "THE" in Turkish is - (y) i / ü / ı / u. For example:

  • Ben bir film izliyorum. I am watching a film.
  • Ben filmi izliyorum. I am watching the film.
  • Ben bir araba aldım. I bought a car.
  • Ben araba aldım. I bought the car.

If the last letter of the word is a vowel, then you add the letter y as a buffer. For example:

  • Ben gazeteyi okudum. I read the newspaper.
  • Ben kahveyi içiyorum. I am drinking the coffee.
  • Ben araba sürüyorum. I am driving the car.

Please remember that this suffix is used with the object only (It is called the definite object), not with the subject. For example:

Adam kadını seviyor. The man loves the woman.

If the word is a proper noun (names, places, cities etc), then the word takes an aphostrope.

By the way, proper nouns can also take the suffix for "THE" in Turkish. For example:

Ben İstanbul'u seviyorum. I like (the) Istanbul.

2. TO in Turkish

The suffix for "TO" in Turkish is - (y) e / a. For example:

  • Ben okula gidiyorum. I am going to school.
  • Ben kafeye gidiyorum. I am going to the cafe.
  • Ben İstanbul'a gidiyorum. I am going to Istanbul.

If the last letter of the word is a vowel, then you add the letter y as a buffer. For example:

  • Ben kafeye gidiyorum. I going to th cafe.
  • Ben Türkiye'ye gidiyorum. I am going to Turkey.

The question word for this case is Nereye (Where "to"). For example:

  • Sen nereye gidiyorsun? Where are you going (to)?
  • Ben okula gidiyorum. I am going to school.

3. AT / IN in Turkish

The suffix for "AT / IN" in Turkish is - de / da. For example:

  • Ben okulda çalışıyorum. I work in the school.
  • Ben kafede oturuyorum. I am sitting at the cafe.
  • Ben İstanbul'da yaşıyorum. I live in Istanbul.

If the last letter of the word is a consonant (f, s, t, ç, ş, h, p), then the suffix becomes - te / ta. For example:

  • Ben ofiste çalışıyorum. I am working at the office.
  • Ben mutfakta yemek yapıyorum. I am making food in the kitchen.
  • Ben Marmaris'te yaşıyorum. I live in Marmaris.

If the word is a proper noun (names, places, cities etc), then the word takes an aphostrope. For example:

Ben Marmaris'te yaşıyorum. I live in Marmaris.

The question word for this case is Nerede (Where "at"). For example:

  • Sen nerede yaşıyorsun? Where do you live (in)?
  • Ben İstanbul'da yaşıyorum. I live in Istanbul.

4. FROM in Turkish

The suffix for "FROM" in Turkish is - den / dan. For example:

  • Ben okuldan geliyorum. I am coming from school.
  • Ben kafeden geliyorum. I am coming from the cafe.
  • Ben İstanbul'dan geliyorum. I am coming from Istanbul.

If the last letter of the word is a consonant (f, s, t, ç, ş, h, p), then the suffix becomes - ten / tan. For example:
