HOW TO USE "İHTİYAÇ (NEEDS)" IN TURKISH

1. Learn the word "İhtiyaç" in Turkish.

The word "İhtiyaç" is "Need in English. It is also used as "Need something & to do something" just like "Gerek & Lazım".

• Benim gitmem lazım/gerek. I need to go.
• Benim gitmeye ihtiyacım var. I need to go.

They both can be translated as "Need to". The difference is that "Gerek & Lazım" refers to necessity or duty, while "İhtiyaç" refers to a personal need or feeling. For example:

• Benim gitmem gerek / lazım. I need to go, because it’s time to go, it’s scheduled, arranged, it’s part of my job, etc.
• Benim gitmeye ihtiyacım var. I need to go, although I don’t have to, I’m not supposed to, it’s not scheduled, etc, but that’s what I need, what I feel...

Literally, you say "I have the need to ..." in Turkish.

• Benim var. I have...
• Benim ihtiyacım var. I need / have the need ...

The object takes the suffix for To (- e / a)" and it is literally translated as "I have the need to something, to doing something".

• Benim ihtiyacım var.
• Benim çaya ihtiyacım var.
• Benim çay içmeye ihtiyacım var.
