How to use the Aorist Tense in Turkish

The Aorist Tense is used for habits, everyday routine, facts promising, volunteer actions, offers, requests and in some grammar forms. For example:

  1. Habits O çay içiyor / içer. He drinks tea.
  2. Routine O erken kalkıyor / kalkar. He gets up early.
  3. Facts, Factual Reality Ay dünyanın etrafında döner. The moon travels around the earth.
  4. Promising Ben sana yardım ederim. (I promise) I will help you.
  5. Volunteer Action "Kapı çalıyor." "Ben açarım." "There is someone at the door." "I’ll open it."
  6. Offers Siz çay içer misiniz? Would you like to drink tea?

For the functions "Habits & Everyday Routine", the Present Tense (-YOR) is used more than the Aorist Tense.

How to form the Aorist Tense in Turkish

Learn how to form the Aorist Tense in Turkish:

1. If the last letter of the verb is a vowel, the suffix becomes "– r –". For example:

  • O uyur. He sleeps.
  • O okur. He reads.
  • O yer. He eats.

2. If the verb has two or more syllabus and the verb ends with a consonant, the suffix becomes "– ir / ır / ür / ur –". For example:

  • O oturur. He sits.
  • O çalışır. He works.
  • O gönderir. He sends.

3. If the verb has one syllabus and the verbs end with a consonant, the suffix becomes "– er / ar –". For example:

  • O içer. He drinks.
  • O açar. He opens.
  • O yazar. He writes.
  • O döner. He returns, turns.

4. There are some exceptions. These verbs should take "- er / ar -" but they take "- ir / ür / ır / ur -" version of the suffix. For example:

  • O alır. He takes / buys.
  • O bilir. He knows.
  • O bulur. He finds.
  • O gelir. He comes.
  • O görür. He sees.
  • O ölür. He dies.
  • O verir. He gives.

  • Ben film izlerim.
  • Sen film izlersin.
  • O film izler.
  • Biz film izleriz.
  • Siz film izlersiniz.
  • Onlar film izler(ler).

Compare the verb tenses in Turkish:

  • O tatil yapıyor. He is taking a vacation.
  • O tatil yap. He took a vacation.
  • O tatil yapacak. He will / is going to take a vacation.
  • O tatil yapar. He takes a vacation.
